Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

  2. Complex of Facilities in the Former Alchemika Factory

Oliveras Boix Arquitectes, Jordi Oliveras Boix, Núria Oliveras Boix

Complex of Facilities in the Former Alchemika Factory

The "Alchemika" plastic factory, located in the Camp de l'Arpa district, occupied part of the old Costa Font industrial complex. The complex, which formed two whole blocks, is the work of Francesc Mitjans and was built between 1948 and 1950. The current planning envisages its transformation into facilities and determines the conservation of its façade. This intervention completes the process of reconversion of one of the two blocks through the insertion of a social and diverse program: Library, Nursery School, Neighbourhood Centre and Residence + Day Centre. The predefined enveloping was a condition that had to be incorporated from the beginning in the process of fitting a complex program. The exposed brick façade with a stone plinth and large windows of vertical proportion and constant rhythm were a pre-existence that the project has sought to integrate through the construction of interior spaces in coherence with its scale and character.

  4. Extension and Rehabilitation of the Albert Pérez Baró Library in Montbau

Oliveras Boix Arquitectes, Jordi Oliveras Boix, Núria Oliveras Boix

Extension and Rehabilitation of the Albert Pérez Baró Library in Montbau

The Montbau-Albert Pérez Baró Library is located in the Montbau estate. Until now, it occupied 2 of the 3 naves of an old school complex built in the late 1950s, to which two extensions were made during the 1990s in order to connect them. The project addresses the comprehensive rehabilitation of the library and its new expansion through the addition of the existing third nave and the construction of a new body that, occupying the courtyard between the two buildings, allows its connection. The new volume of metal structure is poured to the outside through two large windows. The relocation of the main access and the new treatment of the existing garden on Arquitectura Street turn this space into a square that improves the relationship between the equipment and the public space and increases its visibility. The action involves the possibility of giving new life to this architecture of little heritage value but with a considerable sentimental burden for the neighbourhood.
  5. Mostres d'Arquitectura (Barcelona)
