In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

    Omm Hotel

    This is a building designed to be inserted at the same time with singularity as harmoniously in the frame of the urban environment of Barcelona's Eixample. It echoes of his privileged position and directs its gaps to the Passeig de Gracia, so that the user can enjoy both the vision of the street, and the necessary privacy. The facade facing the street Rosselló looks like a sheet as a skin that overlapped the building, that has suffered several cuts that have been 'opened', curving outward, like sheets of a book, like windows of an advent calendar. The sense of opening serves both views as to the correct orientation to the midday sun. It is also a screen that keeps the privacy from the inside, and a acoustic barrier to the traffic. The order of these openings, seemingly random, responds well to the plastic exterior and to the interior needs distribution. A facade that aims to contribute to wealth typological of the Eixample, respecting the environment but not anachronistically mimetic, fully aware to be erected in the early twenty-first century.

    Vapor Gran Warehouses

    The architectural debate on conservation or demolition tends to be approached demagogically by both sides. There are those who declare that everything should be preserved the way it was built, and other who assert that there is always a right to demolish in order to renew. In our view every project has fitting solution. In this case, the overall project by Manel Solà-Morales had conserved two blocks of an industrial complex in Terrassa, a city with an important industrial heritage. We sought to respect the beautiful structure and its appearance to the greatest possible extent, while allowing for the new uses that were required. From being a steam-driven textile mill, it was to become a shopping centre and office complex. We therefore intervened on the side facades that had been amputated, with present-day materials and aesthetics. At the same time we carefully respected all the rest of the construction, with considerable dedication and investment. The floors had to be reinforced, the cast-iron columns had to be filled to make them fire-resistant, the whole of the roof had to be changed to make it waterproof and insulating. The result is unprecedented: a large leisure and commercial centre has been created, pedestrianised and very close to the centre of the city, which harmoniously combines all these uses with housing. The antithesis of the separation of uses and the creation of specialised centres on the outskirts, generating dispersion and vehicle mileage. A return to Mediterranean identity that successfully mixes and resolves all these social uses in the city centre.

    Tarradellas Gardens and Green Wall

    El projecte de remodelació d'aquesta paret mitgera, conseqüència de l'enderroc d'una antiga edificació, transformada ara en jardí vertical, utilitza la matèria viva com a argument. El Jardí Tarradellas funciona com un enorme pulmó que dóna aixopluc a diverses espècies d'animals i vegetals. Una estructura metàl·lica fa d'esquelet de suport del jardí, amb diversos balcons que sustenten les plantes. El jardí toca a terra mitjançant un mur de pedra que s'estén cap al paviment del xamfrà. L’argument compositiu està format per una base sempre verda, sobre la qual broten diverses plantes amb flor, que varien de color al llarg de l'any. Aquest bocí de natura afavoreix la colonització d'espècies animals, principalment d'ocells. Aquesta acció de sutura urbana s'engloba dins del programa de remodelació de parets mitgeres que promou l'Ajuntament, a través de l'Institut del Paisatge Urbà, amb l'objectiu de resoldre discontinuïtats i fractures que sovint apareixen en el teixit urbà construït.
