Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

    Via Europa Multi-Family Housing

The current planning regulations suggest a certain continuity between the proposed buildings and the adjoining plots, following the street alignment along Via Europa and facing the central square. This configuration generates a courtyard at the rear, set lower than Doctor Turró Ring Road. In the initial stages of developing this proposal, it proved difficult to accommodate the entire programme without losing some of the site’s defining characteristics. We concluded that the site’s centrality, its singular nature, its pedestrian vocation, and its irregular, sloping form were the key constraints guiding the project. Our proposal is based on prioritising spatial permeability, freeing up almost the entire surface of the plot and dedicating it to public space. A large plaza is designed to resolve level changes and circulation, thereby concentrating the residential buildings into three freestanding blocks. The plaza unfolds over two well-connected levels that adapt seamlessly to the rising street gradients that define the site perimeter. Both levels emerge from the deliberate and irregular reshaping of the terrain that underpins the project’s formal expression. The upper level (Level 0) is linked to the level of Doctor Turró Ring Road, while the lower level (Level –2) connects to Via Europa; between these two levels lies the space allocated to commercial uses. The residential buildings are arranged on the plot in an apparently random manner, though in fact responding to the specific demands of each location: aligning with the Via Europa street frontage, addressing the central plaza, and accompanying the visual sequences generated by pedestrian routes, always with pedestrians in mind. Beneath the public plaza (Level –3) we can find the communal car park and the residents’ storage rooms. This level is accessed directly from each vertical core of lifts, while vehicles enter via the vehicular access located at the lower corner of the site. The buildings rise to ground floor plus eight storeys when measured from Level 0 and are stepped in height, giving rise to a dual volumetric composition articulated by a central service wall. In this way, the façade facing Via Europa becomes disarticulated in relation to the opposite façade. The proposed building typology follows a layout of four dwellings per landing: two three-bedroom apartments, one four-bedroom unit and one two-bedroom unit. Their main living spaces are oriented towards different sides of the building, seeking sunlight and the best possible views. The internal layout of the apartments follows a consistent scheme for two-, three- and four-bedroom units, based on grouping the service areas around the central core, while the remainder of the dwelling is clearly organised into day and night zones, separated by a service band comprising bathrooms and dressing areas.

  3. Millenium Tower

    Millenium Tower

The Millenium Tower is linked to the creation of the Macià Axis, which channeled Sabadell's economic growth from the 1980s. It is located on a plot of land near Catalunya Park, surrounded by heterogeneous urban fabrics that combine single-family houses with buildings of various sizes. The tower orders the surroundings and rises as a landmark that, for the first time, exceeds the height of the church bell tower. Although the regulations provided for a plan with a square perimeter, the tower adopts a slightly rectangular configuration, with rounded edges, in order to gain slenderness in the front view. The vertical communications core is slightly off-centre, so that up to four companies can be installed on each floor without the need for corridors. The view from the inside allows a 360-degree turn over the historic city, the growing city and the future city.
