Raventós House
José Antonio Coderch de Sentmenat
A magnificent example of Rationalist architecture from the 1970s, designed by the Barcelona architect Josep Antoni Coderch. The building has an irregular plan, forming a geometry of cubes with projections and recesses that create a game between space and void, with flat roofs and surrounded by a garden. The façades are finished in exposed brickwork, laid horizontally and entirely devoid of ornament. The parapets are treated like tiled bands, with two courses of flat bricks. The reddish texture of the brick contrasts with the green of the garden and the ivy used to cover sections of the walls. Rising above the overall volumes are tall chimneys with metal caps, acting as visual landmarks of the building from the outside and providing the only vertical accents in a house otherwise dominated by horizontality. Openings on the main façade consist of a rectangular entrance with a canopy and flat overhang, and corner windows in the front volume and on the upper floor. The property’s perimeter fence is formed by a metal wire mesh completely covered with ivy.1970

La Muntanyeta Residential Complex
Josep Ignasi de Llorens Duran, Alfons Soldevila Barbosa
The six houses respond to a clear and simple construction procedure, in which each element acts independently and with great flexibility. The structure is always based on exposed concrete block walls, with visible installations located on the exterior walls. The basis of the constructive simplicity is the modulation of the concrete block, the volumetrics and the distribution of the houses and the independence with which the constructive elements are treated. The box, slabs, roof, partitions, carpentry, installations and finishes hardly interfere with each other, which clarifies the work of industrialists, simplifies repairs and allows great flexibility for the user. The block and its modulation result in a rigorous execution of all elements. Quality and not cheapness is not derived from this constructive simplicity.1977 - 1979
