Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

1. Caldereria Petita

    Caldereria Petita

El Puig, in the municipality of Gelida, is a line of houses meandering along a single sloping street where the original typology – between partitions, with a cellar, with a patio – is disfigured by an extended dynamic of self-construction. The walls are piled up in the courtyards on top of each other, next to or below giving rise to new sheds, laundry rooms, porches... It is difficult to discover the order of appearance of all these elements, of a diverse nature, that make up a constructively precarious environment. To build here is to overlap. We asked the man from the agricultural machinery repair workshop adjacent to the building to carry out the new interventions: a façade, a door, a staircase, a forging, a skylight and a loft. They are autonomous constructions, self-referential, placed between floors (staircase), between water (light), between inside and outside (façade-furniture), in the void (loft)... The new architecture must appear as another construction. We trace an outline with a single material (iron), leaving some margins to fill in later. It is a small boiler room task: by bending and welding the 8mm steel plate we circle the void to build the new elements.

  4. El Roure Arts Centre and La Ginesta Library

Calderon-Folch Studio, Pilar Calderon Martínez, Marc Folch Hernández

El Roure Arts Centre and La Ginesta Library

A unified design is needed for a building with three different uses: a theatre for 350 people, a public library of 1,260 m2 and a cultural centre with a large number of activities and diverse services. The site, almost triangular, is a bank of the stream meander with a large old oak tree that will be preserved and give the centre its name.

  6. Centre for Comparative Medicine and Bioimaging of Catalonia (CMCiB)

Calderon-Folch Studio, Pilar Calderon Martínez, Lluís Corbella i Jordi, Marc Folch Hernández, Pol Sarsanedas

Centre for Comparative Medicine and Bioimaging of Catalonia (CMCiB)

The Centre for Comparative Medicine and Bioimaging of Catalonia (CMCiB) is a building that houses a first-line scientific research centre. It is a reference equipment based on ethical research criteria, where the technical and functional complexity as well as the comfort features have been solved in an effective, sustainable and sensitive way with the site. The integration into the environment is approached from the implementation of the volume in the topography, the definition of an organic geometry and its materiality. The building is located on a large plot of land bordering the forest area at the highest point of the university campus; this difference in height is used to form a topographical building that links the various levels, articulating the functional program inside and generating the minimum apparent volume on the outside. Thus, the research floors - which require stable climatic conditions - remain hidden under a surface of vegetal covers. The apparent, compact volume with rounded edges as well as the wooden façade, integrate the building into the natural environment of the Marina Mountain Range. The complex functional program and technical requirements are solved thanks to the generation of two levels of access that divide the administrative area from the scientific-technical area. In relation to the users, one of the most important challenges in excellence in scientific research is the consolidation of local talent and the attraction of the international and, for this reason, a building with high comfort features is projected, which they range from the situation of the building to the conformation of bright interior spaces and naturalised atmospheres. Likewise, with the aim of minimising CO2 emissions, bioconstruction systems have been chosen - such as a biospherical façade and a prefabricated structure - and multiple energy efficiency measures.
