In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.
The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.
The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.
Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.
The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.
The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.
We kindly invite you to help us improve the dissemination of Catalan architecture through this space. Here you can propose works and provide or amend information on authors, photographers and their work, along with adding comments. The Documentary Commission will analyze all data. Please do only fill in the fields you deem necessary to add or amend the information.

Single-storey building with a gabled roof. The façade reflects the symmetry of the building. On the ground floor there are two entrances leading to two classrooms and staircases. The entranceways and almost the entire height of the first floor are made of exposed brick, while the rest of the façade is plastered. The brickwork in the openings on both floors and the ceramic decorations are particularly noteworthy. The façade is topped with a pediment bearing the coat of arms of the village of Els Hostalets, made of artificial stone. The side façades have windows and follow the same composition.
There is a newer section attached to the rear façade.
The land was owned by Pere Pujol.
The building has been renovated. The first floor, which originally housed the teachers' homes, now contains classrooms. The layout of the interior staircases and the entire exterior of the building have been preserved.
Carrer J. Mestre Ladós was developed in the early 20th century.
This building is part of a complex comprising houses nos. 1, 3, 5 and 7.
A single-storey building with a gabled roof. On the ground floor there are two entrances (one for boys and one for girls) leading to two classrooms and access staircases, while the upper floor contains the flats where the teachers lived. The entrance portals and almost the entire height of the first floor are made of exposed brick, and the rest of the façade is stuccoed. The brickwork of the openings on both floors and the ceramic decorations are particularly noteworthy. The symmetrical façade is topped with a pediment bearing the coat of arms of the village of Els Hostalets, made of artificial stone. The side façades have windows and follow the same composition system. The composition of the openings is highly original, as they are narrow and have stepped profiles, with lintels framed by sections of brick. The layout of the interior staircases and the entire exterior of the building have been preserved.
Although the schools were originally designed in 1910 by Miquel Madorell Rius on a plot of land ceded to the Town Council by Joan Godó Llucià, the project that was finally carried out was another one that followed the basic lines of the 1910 design, ultimately drawn up by Josep Domènech i Mansana as architect of the Ministry of Education. The first stone was laid in July 1913, and the building was inaugurated in 1919. It functioned as a school until 2005 and currently houses a recreation centre, the Music Room, the municipality's Photographic and Documentary Archive and the Post Office. The land was originally owned by Pere Pujol. This building is part of a complex comprising houses nos. 1, 3 and 5 on the same street. Josep Domènech i Mansana was architect for the Ministry of Education from 1917, for which he built public schools in Badalona, Argentona, Esparreguera, etc. He was a professor at the School of Arts and Crafts in Barcelona, municipal architect of Sant Celoni and designer of the ‘El Águila’ warehouses in Barcelona. Carrer Mestre Ladós, the street where the Escola Renaixença is located, was developed in the early 20th century.
The building is also known as Public Schools and ‘National Schools’.
