About
In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.
The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.
The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.
Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.
The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.
The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

Dwellings at 5 Atenes Street
Large building located in the of Sant Gervasi – Galvany district which occupies almost half of a block with frontage on Atenes and Turó de Monterols Streets and a private passage that has been converted into a garage. It consists of a ground floor, five floors and, in some places, an attic set back from the plan of the façade. The openings on the three façades follow vertical axes and are all rectangular without decoration. This sobriety of the windows contrasts with the game of entrances and exits that the façade makes from tribunes and balconies that give plasticity to the façade. The corner between Atenes and Turó de Monterols Streets is particularly noteworthy, where there are large overhanging stone balconies that make up the corner. The rest of the balconies have the base of the work and then a white bladed railing. The wall of the fifth floor in some places recedes from the plane of the façade, creating a terrace in front. The facing of the ground floor is covered with stone, while the rest of the building is plastered and painted light pink. Sixte Illescas was the architect and at the same time the owner of the building. In 1953, some floors were added to the roof of the Turó de Monterols Street façade. -
Extension of the Atenas 5 Residential Building
Large-scale residential building located in the Sant Gervasi–Galvany district, occupying almost half a city block with façades onto Carrer d’Atenes, Carrer de Turó de Monterols and a private passage adapted as a garage access. The building comprises a ground floor, five upper storeys and, in certain areas, a recessed penthouse set back from the main façade line. The openings on the three façades are arranged along vertical axes and are all rectangular, without ornamentation. This restraint in the window design contrasts with the interplay of projecting and recessed volumes created by bay windows and balconies, which lend plasticity to the façades. Particularly noteworthy is the corner between Carrer d’Atenes and Carrer de Turó de Monterols, where deep cantilevered masonry balconies wrap around the angle of the building. The remaining balconies feature masonry bases with white criss-cross balustrades above. In some sections, the wall of the fifth floor is recessed from the façade plane, creating terraces in front. The ground floor is clad in stone, while the remainder of the building is rendered and painted in a pale pink tone. Sixte Illescas was both the architect and the owner of the building. In 1953, additional apartments were added on the rooftop along the Carrer de Turó de Monterols façade.
