Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

    Communication Campus of the UPF

As has been characteristic of the different implementations of the Pompeu Fabra University throughout the process of creating the urban campus of the UPF, the complex is made up of buildings from the Historical Heritage of the city that are restored and adapted to the new use and buildings of new construction. Ca l’Aranyó is an old textile factory built in 1872 in accordance with a partially completed project from which two pieces of considerable historical and architectural value have been preserved - the factory and the warehouse. It is the first to be implemented on the recently created Cerdà plot with a project that contemplates the total configuration of the island, with buildings on its perimeter and the boilers in the central area. The chimney that characterises the central square has been preserved, which once again functions linked to the nearby energy plant. The layout of the building makes it compatible with the conservation of the old buildings and the construction of new volumes based on the PERI arrangement of the 22@ Audiovisual Campus. The ensemble formed by the remodeled buildings, the new buildings of the UPF, together with the Media Complex sets are developed around a central square, open to Llacuna and Roc Boronat streets, which located at the original level -1.80 with respect of the environment, it is a space of relationship with the intention of articulating the connections between the different parts that make up the complex and at the same time enhances its relationship with the environment, creating an area with the vocation of an urban space. The character of the factory buildings is maintained with the presence of interior streets, the chimney, the façade and the recovery of interior elements such as pillars and cast iron beams, Catalan vaults and trusses. The new buildings are treated with a tense skin and with a material treatment that contrasts plastically and tectonically with the old building. Screen-printed glass is used with different degrees, to achieve an effect of vibration and reflections. The openings are integrated into the general skin.
  4. Police Region and Police Station in Tortosa

Josep Benedito i Rovira, Santi Orteu Palou

Police Region and Police Station in Tortosa

Museum of Ethnology and World Cultures

The Museum of World Cultures is located on Montcada Street, currently the most important nucleus of medieval civil architecture in Barcelona, listed as BCIN. It occupies two Gothic buildings, listed as BCIL, and known as Palau Marqués de Llió and Palau Nadal. The important historical and artistic component of the palaces, and the desire to make it compatible with the exhibition and museum content frame and define the character of the performance. Respectful and discreet with the character of the spaces and historical elements, but without false mimicry and assuming without complexes the condition of contemporaneity of an intervention of this type. The works have involved a strong intervention of reform and adaptation, to the new use of the buildings, to the current regulations, to the requirements of the museum proposal, renovation of the facilities, structural reinforcement of walls and slabs, restructuring of circulations and spaces, to the delicate restoration of the Gothic beams present in some of the rooms.
