Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

Chronology (10)

  1. Association of Surveyors and Technical Architects of Lleida (COAATL)

    Franc Fernández, Moisés Gallego Olmos

Association of Surveyors and Technical Architects of Lleida (COAATL)

  2. Bernat Picornell Swimming Pools

    Franc Fernández, Moisés Gallego Olmos

    Bernat Picornell Swimming Pools

Very little remains of the old Bernat Picornell swimming pools, since the existing buildings have been cut down or extended as needed. The swimming pool vessels are new, larger and better equipped technically speaking. The training pool is covered, the changing rooms are in a different place and there are more of them. Only the old stands for spectators are preserved. They are the witness of a hypothetical refursbishment which has been in fact a new building for the practice of swimming. The current facilities are hidden behind a brick fence that surrounds the plot, surrounded by a dense grove of trees. Both elements act as camouflage that eases their presence, as does the lack of formalisation. Everything is arranged in such a way that the fragments that can be glimpsed behind the walls do not allow its identification as a water enclosure. The external environment is almost unchanged and the same goes for the general implementation. Subtle traces of the old timidity will remain but, at the same time, the new and powerful structure of the roof will emerge, and the new façades that were not there before. Everything is done with the attempt to allow the building to be added to the set of constructions that make up the Olympic ring.
  3. Nova Icària Municipal Pavilion

    Franc Fernández, Moisés Gallego Olmos

    Nova Icària Municipal Pavilion

Located in a plot on one of the Eixample’s corners, the program required the inclusion of a sports court, cultural facilities and a gym, so that all three uses could work simultaneously and independently. The building conforms to the shape of the bezel and supports the sports court, forming a central box that allows you to control the volume of the set through the stepped roof and the smaller bodies on the sides. The building reaches its maximum height at the corner, decreases towards the interior of the block and resolves the sides with low fences that protect the garden remains and the rear body of the library. This is an interpretation of the Eixample’s corner that compensates for the absence of openings with a delicate articulation of the volumes. The gym hangs from the roof, which ensures natural lighting and frees up space on the floor for the rest of the program.
  4. L'Olivera Civic Centre and Sports Facility

    Moisés Gallego Olmos

L'Olivera Civic Centre and Sports Facility

In the northwest area of Sant Boi there is a green space that creates a funnel-shaped void, closed at the wide end by the rear façades of some buildings. The plot offers the possibility to create a backdrop that does not exist now. The new building is generated with a uniform plan made up of few lines, related to the important scale imposed by the exterior space. The programme suggests the arrangement of three closed buildings within a single enclosure: a residence, a cultural and social building and a sports building. The three parts of the programme are contained in a single enclosure, forming three juxtaposed bodies, and the façade acts as a unifying element. Thus, each part of the programme can be developed independently, once the relationships between the elements have been established. The result is a container of large dimensions, uniform and linked to the scale and the urban requirements of the location.

Sports Pavilion and Changing Rooms of Sant Salvador Sports Complex

  7. Tàrrega Municipal Swimming Pools

Gallego Arquitectes, Àlex Gallego i Urbano, Moisés Gallego Olmos
