Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

Chronology

  1. Vila Olímpica Dwellings

Pilar de la Villa Ugas, Sergi Godia i Fran, Josep Urgell i Beltrán

    Vila Olímpica Dwellings

It consists of a very long façade (250ml) in a compromised situation: the gateway to the Vila Olímpica from the city, framing the two iconic towers of the Port Olímpic together with the curved façade of MBM. There are 3 singularities in the development of the façade, all of them in the northern end: 1. It is the tallest building at its end. 2. It is a bridge building over Doctor Trueta Street. 3. There was an "absorption" by part of the existing office building which forced an effort of containment and compositional rigors able to absorb all the "accidents" in a unitary and orderly concept of the façade conceived as a limit and presentation of the neighbourhood.
  2. Vila Olímpica Primary Healthcare Centre

Pilar de la Villa Ugas, Sergi Godia i Fran, Josep Urgell i Beltrán

    Vila Olímpica Primary Healthcare Centre

The Primary Healthcare Centre (CAP) is designed as a box perforated inside by a patio that solves the lighting and ventilation of all the waiting rooms. The façades are organised with a modulated and repetitive type of void that does not reflect the complexity of the building. This organisational complexity can be seen inside the building, structured around a central courtyard that reflects the programmatic differences of the various floors in its section. The accesses are on the ground floor, differentiating the continuous attention area from the rest of the building, and the reception, archive, distribution and pharmacy warehouse, the offices of medical checks, the radiology area and the extractions and laboratory area are connected to the continuous attention area. The first floor is used for rehabilitation and physical therapy. The second and third floors are intended for the multipurpose area. On the fourth floor we find the health personnel and the administrative area. The parking lot, warehouses and technical premises are located on the basement floor. The design of the structural elements, installations and closure facilitate subsequent interior remodeling and redistribution.
  3. Rehabilitation and Adaptation of the Calàbria 66-78 Building

Laviña - de la Villa Arquitectura, Pilar de la Villa Ugas, Juli Laviña Batallé, Mariona Laviña de la Villa

Rehabilitation and Adaptation of the Calàbria 66-78 Building

The architectural proposal responds to previous strategies: Functional based on rationalising interior distributions, enabling the unitary reading of the building, based on functional flexibility, allowing the integration of the present and the future. Formal based on the urban response, both to the Calàbria façade, formally integrated into the Eixample plot, and to the future relationship with the interior of the block, generating permeabilities which enhance this relationship. Technical and sustainable, both from the point of view of interior functionality and its facilities, as well as its external manifestation, to achieve better climatic and comfort contributions, optimising natural lighting and achieving it with light regulation and climate to improve energy consumption. The building houses the program of several operators: Pere Calders Adult School Centre for Linguistic Normalization Neighbourhood and District Space BSM offices Citizen Service Department
