Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

  1. Pere Sitges Bassa House

    Eduard Ferrés i Puig

    Pere Sitges Bassa House

Civil building. Construction with a ground floor, main floor, attic and a rooftop with a square tower that remains in the central part of the façade. Its interest lies in the refurbishment that took place at the end of the 19th century. It is characterised by the great profusion of ornamental sculptural elements that crown the openings (curiously none of them are of the same shape or size): breakwaters with shields, fleurons, garlands, human figures; imposts and capitals with floral and animal elements; animal gargoyles at the corners of the tower. The main floor is accessed via a two-flight staircase with sculpted handrails. The façade is decorated with sgraffito. There is a garden at the front of the house, enclosed with an iron gate also decorated with floral elements. It is one of the most characteristic buildings of Passeig de Vilassar. There is no date of construction, but in the photographs we can see that it was already built in 1898.
  2. Casa del Director de la Fàbrica Asland

Eduard Ferrés i Puig, Lluís Homs i Moncusí

XIX i principis del s. XX.

  4. Villa Flora

    Eduard Ferrés i Puig

    Villa Flora

Two-storey house from 1920 with a detached ground floor and a separate gate at the entrance. It has a very large garden which continues on the other side of the stream, with a large entrance gate. Inside the garden there are small temples, fountains and other architectural elements. The building has influences from different styles, as the author was a man who traveled a lot. The influence of the Vienna Secession stands out.
  5. Sant Josep Residence

    Eduard Ferrés i Puig

    Sant Josep Residence

Building that borders the old Red Cross and the old Carmelite convent, now the parish of Sant Josep. It is part of the charity space that will be located in the city at the beginning of the 20th century. The building, owned by the City Council, follows the noucentista style, built in 1912 with modernist elements. The upper windows and the tribune at the entrance are worth noting, which give it a certain similarity with the building next door, by Puig i Cadafalch (Red Cross). Despite everything, the conception of the structure of the house responds to a much more rational, functional and institutionalised line. According to the Heritage Catalogue, where it is included, the façade and the volumes are protected, the interiors being subject to change. Sgrafittos Newly created on the façades, designed and made by the artist Parés de Mataró at the beginning of 1988 on the occasion of the renovation works on the interior and exterior of the building. The sgraffitos occupy approximately 600 m of drawing. When he was entrusted with the project, Parés made 4 preliminary designs, a moderate modernist one, one with flowers, a noucentista one and a simple one. The architect Martí Coll chose the first, the most flowery modernism. The motifs are basically flowers and waves, which can be seen in the borders that surround the building. On the west façade, the coat of arms of Catalonia and the staff of Sant Josep stand out, as the charity still depends on the parish. Like the building attached to the convent, the location of the municipal charity and the old people's asylum was granted to the city council in 1942. The origin of the asylum is due to a provision of the General Captain of the Principality, ordering all the towns to collect all the elderly and poor and give them shelter in 1836. The municipal buildings were insufficient, since there was a primary school for poor girls in the same place, and the current municipal charity of Sant Josep was built in 1912, with an entrance through the wall of Sant Llorenç.
  6. Lladó Houses

    Eduard Ferrés i Puig

    Lladó Houses

Set of houses that form a homogeneous group. All are single-family homes with a ground floor and have an exit or patio at the front and another at the back. In all of them, the top stands out; which, although it hides the roof, it is purely ornamental. None of them are the same: some feature crenellations, others sinuous lines in the form of waves, etc. All of them are sgraffito with garlands and floral motifs. Above the three openings of the façade there are several floral motifs. Above the three openings of the façade there are various types of breakwaters: garlands, cornices with antefixes, etc. All the houses have an identical grid that gives more homogeneity to the whole.
  7. Viaducte de Vallcarca

Eduard Ferrés i Puig, Lluís Homs i Moncusí, Miquel Pascual i Tintorer
