Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

  1. La Farigola del Clot School

Bosch, Tarrús, Vives Arquitectes, Jordi Bosch Genover, Joan Tarrús Galter, Santiago Vives i Sanfeliu

    La Farigola del Clot School

The school is located in an area delimited by Meridiana Avenue and the Mataró motorway, at one end of the old Clot district, between the market and La Farinera, built at the end of the 19th century. With the implementation of the school within the remains of this urban structure, the aim is to promote the creation of a pedestrian axis between the two major traffic routes that connects its two most representative buildings. The construction is planned around a covered passage that crosses the whole school and connects the access from Hernaz Cortés Street to the playgrounds. The organisation of the school responds to a clear typological scheme, deliberately simple, and its formal world includes suggestions of industrial architecture before modernism, within a process of the essentialisation of the most archaic elements of construction: The wall and the architrave are emphasised by the ashlar masonry of the concrete block and by the edge beams directly supported on walls and pilasters.

Remodelling and Restoration of Teixidor House as the Headquarters of the COAATC

  5. Habitatges Protegits Parc Central

Bosch, Tarrús, Vives Arquitectes, Jordi Bosch Genover, Joan Tarrús Galter, Santiago Vives i Sanfeliu

    Habitatges Protegits Parc Central

    Restoration of Girona Town Wall

  8. Alberg de Joventut de Girona

Bosch, Tarrús, Vives Arquitectes, Jordi Bosch Genover, Joan Tarrús Galter, Santiago Vives i Sanfeliu

11), avui oficines.
  9. Vila Olímpica Dwellings

Bosch, Tarrús, Vives Arquitectes, Jordi Bosch Genover, Joan Tarrús Galter, Santiago Vives i Sanfeliu

    Vila Olímpica Dwellings

Both buildings define the same urban front on Barcelona’s Nova Icària Avenue. The façade follows the streets’ alignments and is projected as a sum of formally equal units which are joined together by the stairs’ bodies, thus emphasising the vertical rhythm of the composition. On both sides of Àvila Street – and to reinforce the idea of a unitary front – the buildings are as close to each other as possible, leaving porches on the ground floor that make way to the interior of the island. In this interior, the façades are defined by large galleries that filter and relate the houses to the gardens. Due to the urban conditions resulting from the confluence between Icària Avenue and Bogatell Avenue, the building receives a unique treatment at this point. The adaptability of the plant to the various needs of the users is given by the orderly and regular arrangement of pillars and openings, the use of drywall in interior divisions, and the existence of alternative circulation through the outer gallery. The fact that the services and kitchens are concentrated and that the bedrooms are aligned gives a clear flexibility to the house’s uses.
  10. Centre Cultural de la Mercè

Bosch, Tarrús, Vives Arquitectes, Jordi Bosch Genover, Joan Tarrús Galter, Santiago Vives i Sanfeliu

  11. UdG Arts Faculty

Bosch, Tarrús, Vives Arquitectes, Jordi Bosch Genover, Joan Tarrús Galter, Santiago Vives i Sanfeliu

    UdG Arts Faculty

  12. Llevant-Sud Dwellings

Bosch, Tarrús, Vives Arquitectes, Jordi Bosch Genover, Joan Tarrús Galter, Santiago Vives i Sanfeliu

    Llevant-Sud Dwellings

This housing complex, built in several phases, takes up the front of two blocks of houses in the Eixample and is structured as a large piece, elongated and parallel to the Mataró motorway, made up of two elements: a head and a body. The desire to configure an architecture at the scale of the environment and with a clear urban character is expressed as a serial and almost uninterrupted sequence of the essential element of the composition: the tribune that organises the interior spaces around the living room and manifests itself on the outside with a gentle curve that recalls the viewpoints of 19th century bourgeois architecture but taken to another scale that transforms its meaning. The monumentality of the whole is to be accounted for by the domestic treatment of the basic unit: the house. The complex adopts a double linear block typology, with patios covered with skylights. This interior space is manifested in the headboards, where the double block has been resolved as a unitary façade. The façades are structured on three levels that correspond to the plinth, shaft and architrave of the classical proportions, but translated into an industrial language of visible work that adopts various combinations and chromatic games and that somehow still leaves the factory architecture of modernism or American urban architecture of the 19th century. The distribution of the homes is organised from the living area linked to the tribune, which is directly connected to the kitchen and the master bedroom, thus creating a complementary circulation that revolves around the living room be and turns it into the central space of the home.
  13. Edifici de Despatxos de la Facultat de Lletres UdG

Bosch, Tarrús, Vives Arquitectes, Jordi Bosch Genover, Joan Tarrús Galter, Santiago Vives i Sanfeliu

  14. Faculty of Translation and Interpretation of the UAB

Jordi Bosch Genover, Joan Tarrús Galter, Santiago Vives i Sanfeliu

Faculty of Translation and Interpretation of the UAB

The building echoes the few references offered by a very poorly configured place on the Humanities campus: a square on the north side, a steep slope on the south side, and the railway crossing, which gives access to the whole campus. The programme is clearly separated into two bodies that are configured according to these references: the body of the offices ends in the direction of the ravine and the train track, while the body of the classrooms adopts a staggered section that also gives it an oriented character. Thus, the whole seems to be lifted from the square and suspended over the ravine. The north façade unifies both bodies by means of an unfolded mesh lattice that responds to the consolidated character of the square. Between the two bodies, a landscaped courtyard welcomes access and organises the circulations that unify the whole complex. The programme is developed independently of morphological considerations.
  15. Ingla House

    Santiago Vives i Sanfeliu

    Ingla House

  16. La Llagosta Municipal Cemetery

Conxita Balcells i Blesa, Santiago Vives i Sanfeliu

    La Llagosta Municipal Cemetery

The new Llagosta municipal cemetery has been designed as a public facility within the general framework of the future Besós river park. The project gives the cemetery a capacity of 401 niches and 110 columbariums, which would be reached once the two planned phases are built. Due to the proximity of the water table, the construction of buried tombs and pantheons has been ruled out. In the first phase - which occupies an area of 1,174 m2 - 201 niches and 56 columbariums, an ecumenical chapel, an autopsy room, ancillary services and car parks have been built, and the guidelines for its future growth have also been set. The site is organised from a series of small niche courtyards, which are arranged along two main axes. This series of patios could be said to draw a carpet. The chapel, the morgue, etc. are interspersed in the succession of courtyards and have their own collected atmosphere. This organisation of space provides the site with a human scale, far from any monumental rhetoric, and allows the fragmentation of the whole into small environments, defined by walls and vegetation, behind which the niches are collected in intimate and differentiated spaces. Among this drawing of walls and courtyards, only the geometric volume of the chapel roof stands out, which establishes a clear reference in a very blurred environment. The site has been completed with the planting of pines and virgin vines, in the niche patios; mimosas and laurels in the courtyards of the chapel; cypress trees on the access road; and, around the enclosure, a space has been delimited by planting long rows of poplars.
  17. Palau Primary School

Conxita Balcells i Blesa, Santiago Vives i Sanfeliu

    Palau Primary School

Based on the educational and social function of the school building, we propose that the implementation of this new centre helps to structure the environment in which it is located, which is currently poorly configured from an urban point of view. The fact of opting for a single-storey building allows school life to be organised through a central axis - which gives access to all the dependencies - which acts at the same time as a transit and meeting area, with a clear vocation to be used, if appropriate, for pedagogical purposes. The solution we present proposes a modular system of classrooms and service spaces, which gives flexibility in their uses. The courtyards are determined by the same layout of the classrooms, achieving an articulated set with a marked personality. The independent access to the sports courts and the gymnasium (which can be used in a multipurpose way), located at one end of the school grounds, allows it to be used outside school hours and, perhaps, related to the future multi-sports complex which is planned to be built in Palau de Plegamans. This approach, together with the choice of materials for construction (concrete, exposed work, aluminum...), optimises its maintenance, both in terms of cleaning and the natural aging of the constructions. We also believe that the exterior should be treated with the Vallès’ vegetation.

  19. Els Pins Pre-School Centre

    Santiago Vives i Sanfeliu

    Els Pins Pre-School Centre

The school is organised as a network of classrooms and courtyards along a central corridor. The classrooms are grouped in pairs, sharing a group of bathrooms. This core has independent access and visual control from each of the classrooms. Each group has a private playground, which has the function of extending teaching activities outdoors. Close to the main entrance, we locate the multi-purpose room, functionally linked to the hall. The teachers' room has a centre of bathrooms adapted to people with reduced mobility, as well as the kitchen and warehouses. The connection to the existing Nursery School building is made through a porch extending the interior corridor. This connection has made it necessary to open a new door in the rear façade of the current centre and to rearrange the interior of a small room. The entire new building has been built with a system of load-bearing walls, of large-format ceramic pieces (2.00 m x 0.60 m x 0.20 m), supported on continuous concrete shoes on foundation wells. The truss and the crowning of the pieces is done using metal bands made of concrete blocks to be seen. On these walls there is a structure in wooden beams 28 cm wide that are left visible.
  20. Aulari Politècnica 3 de la UdG

Manuel Arguijo i Vila, Conxita Balcells i Blesa, Santiago Vives i Sanfeliu

  21. La Garrotxa Secondary School

    Santiago Vives i Sanfeliu

  22. Architectural and Museographical Remodelling of the Sculpture Section of Frederic Marès Museum

Fernando Marzá Pérez, Santiago Vives i Sanfeliu

Architectural and Museographical Remodelling of the Sculpture Section of Frederic Marès Museum

Strolling around the old town of Barcelona, we find the Marès Museum next to the cathedral, located in Sant Iu Square. It is a heterogeneous set of buildings built around a magnificent central courtyard. The first room (sala dels Arcs) was inaugurated in 1946 (at that time the Gothic quarter was being reinvented). The museum continued to grow until the seventies. We are not aware that a master plan or an overall project had ever been drawn up. A considerable part is dedicated to showing his collection of painting, sculpture and fine arts, and the other to the collecting passion of Mr. Marès, which is where the relationship between the object and the way it is displayed becomes more evident, typical of a museum designed by an author. From an architectural point of view, the result was a heterogeneous set of rooms and outbuildings of various shapes, different and outdated construction systems, poorly connected and often not located at the same level. The aim of this project was the architectural rehabilitation of the first floor of the museum, where the collection of medieval sculpture is exhibited. Apart from offering new and better technical and environmental conditions for the exhibition of the works, the project, without renouncing its own formal identity, gives continuity and completes the remodeling of the ground floor, which the architect Josep Llinàs started in 1999. To enable the creation of the best environment conducive to the exhibition and contemplation of the works, the new project has been developed in parallel with the museum’s project, where the type of rehabilitation has been defined together with the architectural design of the rooms, their accesses, spatial relationships and routes, such as the new distribution of the collections, the showcases, the support elements, the lighting of the works and the signage. In short, a building has been constructed (forging, enclosures and installations), within an existing building, with a new geometry. Between the two buildings (the original and the new one) a series of interstitial spaces were created, used to place the new installation rooms, showcases or other exhibition elements. The new rooms achieve the character of a new qualified container and establish a relationship of juxtaposition with the old support. The new project is based on letting the objects be the protagonists and that the pieces that are taught are not decontextualized but integrated in this new space. To achieve these objectives, the rooms have been transformed into regular spaces, new connections between areas have been opened and existing ones have been eliminated and new visual relationships have been established between the interior and exterior of the museum. Additionally, the architectural barriers have been removed and a new staircase and freight elevator have been built.
