About
In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.
The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.
The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.
Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.
The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.
The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

La configuració de la biblioteca parteix de la voluntat de desmaterialitzar el volum que forma, per tal de no generar una imatge contrastada amb el bosc. Es divideix en dos cossos longitudinals, separats per un espai de 10 metres que filtra la llum natural i la reparteix pels interiors. El bloc a tocar del bosc s’ha tractat de color negre, mentre que el bloc que dóna al carrer s’ha tractat de color blanc. Una escala secundària, d’accés directe a la primera planta, redueix l’alçària de l’edifici i acaba de completar la descomposició desitjada.

Es divideix en dos cossos longitudinals, separats per un espai de 10 metres que filtra la llum natural i la reparteix pels interiors. El bloc a tocar del bosc s’ha tractat de color negre, mentre que el bloc que dóna al carrer s’ha tractat de color blanc. El lot més suggestiu del campus era un quadrat travessat per un fondal frondós i un bosquet. La biblioteca transgredeix la peça assignada i s’allargassa seguint un eix est-oest, mentre que la trama per a vianants traspassa l’edifici. Sense desendreçar-se respecte a l’ordre del campus, assoleix així un vincle curós i productiu amb el fondal topogràfic i amb les seves riqueses paisatgístiques. Una idea de pont impregna el projecte tant del llarg com del través. Les dues fases longitudinals de l’organisme, efectivament, flanquegen un eix per a vianants que hi passa, convertit ell mateix en un pont sobre el rierol. Alhora, però, en sentit transversal, els dos cossos longitudinals se separen 10 m per cobrir un atri general, un enorme «espai públic» intern al conjunt, en una certa evocació dins l’edifici del fondal natural extern. La coberta que s’hi desplega, oberta al nord i al bosc, introdueix dins aquest atri no tan sols la llum, sinó també les vibracions vegetals del seu context. Mecanismes projectuals desagregats desmaterialitzen la idea d’edifici: s’arriba a diferenciar el color dels dos blocs, amb l’eficaç solució de subsumir el del nord en l’ombra del bosc mentre l’altre refulgeix al sud. Varietat de recursos i detalls, una única arquitectura. Si bé el campus es pretenia un pattern neoclassicitzant i aquest projecte viu d’un pensament ben aliè i més lliure, la interpretació del lloc i la creació de virtuts afegides al mateix indret el fan una peça ben feliç de la implantació universitària.
